- The name Joshua means the deliverance of God- Jehovah saves
- He was Moses' minister and servant
- He was the leader in fighting Amalek and his people
- He was one of the 12 spies who searched out the and of Canaan
- Joshua was given a commission or charge from Jehovah- Joshua 1:9;Deut. 31:14, 34:9;Num. 27:18-20 Deut. 31:23 Have not I commanded you? And He charged Joshua, the son of Nun, and said, Be strong and take courage, for you will bring the children of Israel into the land which I have sworn to them: and I will be with you.
- He was God's choice for Israel
- He was given a spirit of wisdom
- The land was promised to Abraham by the living God- Gen. 15:18;Ex. 23:31;Joshua 1:4
- But there were evil and wicked nations in the land- Deut. 9:3-6; Joshua 3:9-10
- Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites
- These nations in Canaan were not God fearing because they had other gods and idols, and did terrible things; e.g., in demon worship they burned children as a sacrifice
- These nations were rebellious and proud
- Joshua led the people in defeating all these evil and wicked nations and gaining the land of Canaan for God
