The Gibeonites Asked Joshua For Help When The Amorites Attacked (Joshua Obeyed God and His Word and Jehovah Defeated the Amorites)

MEMORY VERSE: Joshua 10:8 And Jehovah said to Joshua, Do not be afraid of them, for I have given them into your hand. No man among them will stand before you.
BONUS VERSE: Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and be bold; do not be afraid or dismayed. For Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go.
  1. Cibeon asked Joshua for help against five kings of the Amorites who rose up against them because of their pact with Israel-Joshua 10:1 to 12:23
    1. The Amorites were descendants of the cursed Ham and Canaan (Noah's son and grandson)-Gen. 10:6, 15-16; Joshua 11:20
      1. The Amorites were the most numerous people in Canaan and were very sinflul
      2. It was of Jehovah to harden their hearts so they would not make peace with Israel so that He might utterly destroy them
    2. Adonizedek king of Jerusalem instigated war with Gibeon-Joshua 10:1-S
      1. He was frightened because he heard what Joshua had done to Ai and Jericho and their kings
      2. Adonizedek gathered four other Ainorite kings to do battle against Gibeon, because they had made peace with God's people
    3. Israel as God's people cooperated with God to defeat the wicked Amorites-Joshua 10:6-14
      1. The Gibeonites asked Joshua to save them and help them
      2. God's mighty hand worked to empower Joshua and Israel to utterly destroy the Amorites
        1. They marched all night from Gilgal to Gibeon (about 15 miles) and still had the strength to route them and chase them almost 20 miles
        2. Jehovah cast great hailstones down from heaven to smash the Amorites
        3. Joshua spoke to Jehovah and prayed that the sun and moon would stand still until the battle was finished that thy, and the sun and moon stood still about a whole thy
        4. There has never been a day like that before or after that day when Jehovah listened to the voice of a man and fought for Israel
    4. Israel had victory, and the five Amorite kings had a shameful defeat-Joshua 10:16-27
      1. It was reported to Joshua that the five Amorite kings hid themselves in a cave
      2. His men rolled large stones in front of the cave and stationed men to guard them
      3. After Joshua finished fighting he returned and killed the five kings and hung them
    5. Joshua defeated all the kings and giants (Anakim), and took the whole land for an inheritance according to all that Jehovah had commanded, and there was rest from war-Joshua 11:21-23

APPLICATION:

  1. The Gibeonites chose to ask Israel for help from their many enemies.
  2. Today, when we choose and obey God's word, we will be made strong and know that God is with us.
